On December 30, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded outside the Mountain Creek Branch Library in Dallas, Texas, resulting in the deaths of two teenagers. Fifteen-year-old Angel Solis was found deceased at the scene, while Elijah Martinez, also 15, was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations revealed that the confrontation stemmed from a firearm transaction gone awry. Solis had arranged to sell an AR-15 rifle to Martinez.
Upon meeting, Solis handed over the rifle, concealed in a duffle bag, in exchange for what was later discovered to be counterfeit money provided by Martinez. Realizing the deceit, an altercation ensued, leading both teenagers to draw firearms and exchange gunfire, fatally wounding each other.
Seventeen-year-old Obbie Perez, who had accompanied Martinez to the location, was present during the incident. Following the shootout, Perez hid a Glock 9mm pistol, equipped with an illegal Glock switch, in nearby bushes before contacting emergency services. Initially, he misled first responders by handing over a different handgun. During subsequent police interviews, Perez admitted to being aware of Martinez's plan to use counterfeit money to deceive Solis and attempt a robbery.
As a result of his involvement, Perez was arrested on January 12, 2024, and charged with capital murder for his role in the deaths of Solis and Martinez. He is currently held in the Dallas County Jail with bail set at $2 million.
This tragic event highlights the dangers associated with illegal firearm transactions and the severe consequences that can arise from such activities among youth. The community continues to mourn the loss of two young lives and grapples with the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome.
