On December 31, 2023, 17-year-old Jaden Lazarus Perez was tragically found deceased near his home in Converse, Texas, a suburb of San Antonio. Jaden, known for his infectious smile and love for football, had previously played for Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas.
Investigations revealed that Jaden was the victim of a fatal shooting during a planned drug transaction that turned into a robbery.
According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, 17-year-old John Doerr and a group of teenagers arranged to meet Jaden under the pretense of selling him a small quantity of drugs. However, their actual intent was to rob him. During the encounter, Doerr fired a shot that passed through the head of a 15-year-old accomplice before striking Jaden in the face, resulting in his death at the scene.
Following the incident, the group fled in a stolen SUV, later abandoning the injured 15-year-old at a local hospital. The 15-year-old survived and is considered a potential suspect pending further investigation. Authorities recovered the stolen vehicle and, through a consented search of the residence where Doerr had stayed, found the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Doerr was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. Sheriff Salazar indicated that additional charges might be filed against Doerr and other individuals involved as the investigation continues.
This tragic event highlights a concerning trend of younger individuals in San Antonio engaging in serious criminal activities. Local leaders and law enforcement officials emphasize the importance of parental awareness and secure storage of firearms to prevent such incidents.
