Caldwell had gone to the apartment complex to visit his ex-girlfriend, where he became involved in a minor physical altercation with her current boyfriend. After the confrontation, Caldwell walked back toward his van but realized he had lost some jewelry during the scuffle.
He returned to the area to search for his belongings. As he was heading back to his vehicle, an unknown assailant fired multiple shots from the side of the apartment building, striking Caldwell. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at the scene.
In the months following the incident, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has been actively investigating Caldwell's death.
