On January 21, 2024, Nicholas King, 24, of Katy, Texas, attended a birthday party at a short-term rental property on Russet Leaf Trace in the Katy area. The celebration was in honor of 24-year-old Michael Odobo. King was accompanied by his girlfriend, 24-year-old Ellesha Rice. The gathering turned tragic when an altercation escalated into a deadly shooting, resulting in the deaths of King, Rice, and Odobo.
The incident began when a party attendee, identified as 25-year-old Jaylon McIntyre from Port Arthur, allegedly pointed a gun with a laser at a woman and took her phone. When McIntyre attempted to grab her, she fled downstairs seeking help. Odobo intervened, attempting to calm McIntyre, but was fatally shot. McIntyre then reportedly fired indiscriminately at other partygoers, resulting in the deaths of King and Rice, who were found together in the kitchen.
Following the shooting, McIntyre was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of King and Rice. As of now, no charges have been filed regarding Odobo's death, though McIntyre remains the primary suspect under investigation. He is currently being held without bond.
The deaths of King and Rice have deeply affected their families. King's mother described him as having "a very good, loving spirit," noting his role as the family comedian who made everyone feel welcome. Rice, a recent graduate from St. Mary's University, was planning to attend law school with aspirations of becoming a judge. The couple had been together for 19 months and were planning a future together.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They have urged anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers of Houston.
