Steven "Fluffy" Mendoza, a 42-year-old convenience store clerk, was tragically killed on March 20, 2024, while working the overnight shift at a Chevron gas station near Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred around 12:50 a.m. at the corner of Gulf Freeway and Monroe Road.
Mendoza, known affectionately as "Fluffy" due to his size, smile, and big heart, was a beloved father, husband, and friend.
He was working behind the counter when three armed suspects, believed to be in their teens or early 20s, entered the store in an attempt to rob it. During the confrontation, one of the suspects shot and killed Mendoza.
Security camera footage from nearby businesses captured the suspects' arrival and escape. A light-colored sedan, later identified as a silver Hyundai, was seen pulling up to the gas station at 12:42 a.m. One person exited the vehicle and entered the store, followed shortly by at least one other suspect. Within five minutes, the suspects were seen fleeing the scene.
It is believed that Mendoza attempted to defend himself during the robbery. His sister, Jessica Millan, stated that investigators found he had a gun in his hand, suggesting he saw the threat coming and tried to protect himself. Tragically, this was the last action he would take.
The Houston Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the murder. Over the course of several weeks, they identified and arrested four teenage suspects. Two 14-year-olds were apprehended about a week after the murder by HPD's Southeast Division Crime Suppression team. One 16-year-old was arrested on April 6, and another 16-year-old was taken into custody on April 15.
All four juveniles have been charged with capital murder and referred to the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department. Due to their age, their identities and booking photos have not been released to the public.
The murder of Steven Mendoza has left a deep impact on his family and community. He is survived by his wife and three children, the youngest being only six years old. Friends and family remember him as a man who loved others more than himself, with a personality larger than life and a smile a mile wide.
