On March 22, 2024, at approximately 3:40 a.m., Longview Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting at the EZ Mart convenience store located at 700 Gilmer Road in Longview, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered that 18-year-old Tyquan Mumphrey had sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. He was transported by private vehicle to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
During the investigation, detectives identified Tyquan's brother, 20-year-old Tykiron Mumphrey of Gladewater, Texas, as the primary suspect. According to arrest documents, both brothers were armed and firing their weapons near the convenience store. Tykiron admitted that Tyquan was leaning out of the open front passenger window of a moving vehicle, shooting his gun back toward the EZ Mart, while Tykiron fired his own weapon into the air. Surveillance footage corroborated that the brothers were the only individuals seen with firearms during the incident.
Following Tyquan's injury, the driver of the vehicle retrieved him from the roadway and transported him to a medical facility. Based on the evidence and witness statements, authorities arrested Tykiron Mumphrey, initially charging him with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. After Tyquan's death, the charges were upgraded to murder. As of the latest available information, Tykiron remains in the Gregg County Jail without bond.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, as the circumstances suggest a reckless exchange of gunfire between the siblings, leading to a fatal outcome.
