On March 29, 2024, 34-year-old Jaime Torres-DeLeon was fatally shot during a barbecue gathering in Houston's Northshore neighborhood. The event, held at a residence in the 800 block of Catherwood Place, was attended by 20 to 30 people, including children. Witnesses reported that 22-year-old Ricardo Domingo Reyna, under the influence of substances, became disruptive and was asked to leave the party.
Reyna, reportedly admitting to consuming five Xanax bars and two grams of cocaine, waited outside for a ride after being asked to leave. An argument ensued between him and Torres-DeLeon, during which Reyna drew a handgun and shot Torres-DeLeon multiple times at close range, striking his torso, arm, leg, and hand. Torres-DeLeon, a father of three, was unarmed and did not physically engage with Reyna during the altercation.
Following the shooting, Reyna fled the scene on foot. The Houston Police Department identified him as the suspect based on witness statements and issued a murder charge. On April 2, 2024, Reyna surrendered to authorities at the Harris County Jail. He was subsequently booked and charged with murder in the 180th State District Court.
The tragic incident has left a profound impact on Torres-DeLeon's family and the local community. An obituary notes that he was born on November 5, 1989, in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and was dedicated to his work in logistics.
