On April 20, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Corpus Christi Police Officer Kyle Hicks, aged 32, responded to a domestic disturbance call at the Summer House Apartments on Burnham Drive. Upon arrival, Officer Hicks and his partner heard a male and female arguing inside the apartment. When a male subject, later identified as 26-year-old Colten Foster, answered the door, a struggle ensued during which Foster shot Officer Hicks. In response, Hicks' partner returned fire, fatally wounding Foster.
Officer Hicks was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Despite the medical team's efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on April 24, 2024. A dedicated member of the Corpus Christi Police Department for two years, Hicks was also a husband and father of four. In a final act of service, his organs were donated to save others' lives.
