On May 18, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Dallas Police responded to a shooting incident at the Broadstone Paragon Apartments located in the 2400 block of N. Washington Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered two sisters, 24-year-old Amaya Lockett and 22-year-old Jalisa Lockett, deceased from gunshot wounds. A third victim, identified as Moises Flores, was found with gunshot injuries and transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the sisters and their boyfriends were together in the apartment when an argument erupted between Jalisa and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Saadiq Shabazz. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Amaya and her boyfriend, Moises Flores, retreated to a bedroom. Shortly thereafter, gunshots were heard. When Amaya went to check on her sister, Shabazz shot her. He then turned the gun on Flores, who managed to barricade himself in the bedroom and call 911 despite his injuries.
Following the incident, Shabazz fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities. During questioning, he admitted to shooting all three individuals, claiming he acted out of "rage" and did not intend to kill anyone. Shabazz was subsequently charged with capital murder and booked into the Dallas County Jail with a bond set at $3 million.
The tragic deaths of Amaya and Jalisa have left their family and the community in mourning. Both sisters were young mothers; Jalisa's 2-year-old daughter was present in the apartment during the shooting but was unharmed, while Amaya's 10-month-old son was with his father at the time. Their father, Jaunci Lockett, expressed profound grief and emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of domestic violence to prevent such tragedies.
