On May 26, 2024, at approximately 2:35 p.m., Houston police officers responded to an assault call at 3702 Babbling Creek Drive in the Kingwood area. As they arrived, 29-year-old Byron Keith Hall began firing an assault-style rifle at the officers from the driveway. The officers took cover behind their patrol vehicles, and Hall continued to shoot at them. After a few minutes, Hall approached the officers with his hands in the air and was arrested without further incident.
Upon entering the residence, officers discovered 25-year-old Taylor Jewell Ben deceased from gunshot wounds. They also found two juveniles, a 4-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, hiding in a closet upstairs; both were unharmed. Investigations revealed that Hall had engaged in a physical altercation with his sister, Ben, which escalated to her fatal shooting.
Hall was charged with murder, aggravated assault against a public servant, and aggravated assault of a family member. He was booked into the Harris County Jail and later appeared before a judge, where prosecutors noted that Hall was already on deferred adjudication for aggravated assault on a public servant at the time of the incident.
The tragic event shocked the Kingwood community, with neighbors expressing disbelief over the violence in their typically quiet neighborhood. One neighbor remarked, "Who thinks of a gunshot here in Kingwood?"
The case remains under investigation, and authorities are working to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic incident.
