On a visit to Houston to support a friend undergoing cancer treatment, 61-year-old Marietta Allison from Austin was tragically killed on the evening of March 6, 2026. Allison had spent the day at the hospital with her friend, Cassie Daniel, who was receiving her first round of chemotherapy for stage four ovarian cancer. After dropping Daniel off at an apartment in the Heights neighborhood, Allison went to park the car.
It was then that she was confronted by a man attempting to steal her purse in the 500 block of W. 20th Street.
A struggle ensued, and the assailant, later identified as 18-year-old Darius Hall, shot Allison in the neck. Daniel reported hearing a scream and a gunshot shortly after Allison left to park the car. Hall then fled the scene in the vehicle Allison had been driving. Emergency services were called, and Allison was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Friends and family described Allison as a kind and selfless woman, a "bright, bright light in this world," who was dedicated to helping her friend through her illness. Her husband, in a state of shock and heartbreak, remembered her as the love of his life and a radiant presence.
Authorities located the stolen vehicle approximately an hour after the shooting, leading to a police chase. The pursuit ended when the driver, identified as Hall, crashed the car near the Southwest Freeway and Buffalo Speedway. He then fled on foot and barricaded himself inside a nearby townhome complex, resulting in an hours-long standoff with police. SWAT officers responded to the scene, and Hall was eventually taken into custody.
Darius Hall has been charged with capital murder, evading arrest, and tampering with evidence at the state level. In addition to the state charges, federal prosecutors have also filed carjacking and firearms charges against him. At the time of the incident, Hall was reportedly on community supervision for a prior violent offense. He is currently being held without bond in the Harris County Jail.
