On March 20, 2016, at approximately 12:15 p.m., Houston police officers responded to a call at 7320 Holtcamp. Upon arrival, they discovered 18-year-old Esmeralda Martinez, a Hispanic female, unresponsive in her bed. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced her deceased at the scene, identifying multiple gunshot wounds as the cause of death. Esmeralda resided at the address with her boyfriend, 28-year-old Johnathon Sanchez, a Hispanic male.
Earlier that day, around 8 a.m., Esmeralda's mother had left the residence, leaving her daughter and Sanchez alone. When she returned at 12:15 p.m., she found Esmeralda unresponsive and Sanchez absent. Neighbors contacted emergency services upon hearing of the situation.
Further investigation revealed that Sanchez had been involved in an officer-involved shooting earlier that morning, around 9:30 a.m., at 200 South 70th Street. In that incident, he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a public servant. Following these events, Sanchez was apprehended and remained in custody at the Harris County jail. On October 17, 2016, charges were officially filed against him for the murder of Esmeralda Martinez. He was subsequently charged in the 184th State District Court.
