Both women were innocent bystanders and not involved in the initial dispute.
Duke was attending the event with her husband, Christopher Duke. He recounted that upon returning from the restroom, he was informed that his wife had been shot in the neck and torso. Despite immediate medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries. Duke was a founding staff member and administrator at IDEA Rundberg, an educational institution in the area. Her daughter, Alena Holmes, described her as a caring individual and her best friend. The school community mourned her loss, noting that she exemplified the spirit of the institution.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement agencies launched an intensive investigation to apprehend those responsible. On June 20, 2024, 17-year-old Ricky Thompson III from Manor was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
