The event, intended to honor African American freedom and culture, turned deadly when an altercation between two groups escalated into gunfire around 10:50 p.m. Vicknair, along with 54-year-old educator Ara Duke, was struck by stray bullets and pronounced dead at the scene.
Fourteen others sustained injuries during the incident.
Vicknair, a resident of Manor, Texas, was a respected member of the Austin Bar Association and co-founder of the Austin Black Lawyers Association. She is survived by her husband, Kevin, and their three young children: Kenzi (7), Kairo (4), and Kya (1). Her untimely death has left a profound void in both her family and the legal community, with colleagues remembering her as a dedicated professional and loving mother.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Round Rock Police Department launched an intensive investigation. On June 20, 2024, authorities arrested 17-year-old Ricky Thompson III of Manor, charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police indicated that Thompson was involved in the initial altercation that led to the shooting but was not the sole shooter. Subsequent arrests included 18-year-old Keshawn Dixon, apprehended on July 6 in Killeen and charged with third-degree felony deadly conduct. Investigators have suggested that more arrests and charges are anticipated as the inquiry continues.
The community has rallied to support the Vicknair family during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with funeral expenses and provide for the family's immediate needs, reflecting the widespread grief and solidarity following the tragedy. Additionally, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting, underscoring the state's commitment to seeking justice for the victims.
