On the evening of June 20, 2024, in Wichita Falls, Texas, 50-year-old Brandon Lane Clampit was fatally shot outside his residence in the 1500 block of Smith Street. Responding to reports of gunfire around 10 p.m., Wichita Falls Police Department officers discovered Clampit unresponsive near his driveway. Despite immediate life-saving efforts and transportation to United Regional Hospital, Clampit succumbed to his injuries, marking the city's sixth homicide of the year.
The investigation revealed that prior to the shooting, Clampit had been communicating with an individual identified as Marqwon Griffin regarding a marijuana transaction. Surveillance footage from the area showed two individuals, matching descriptions of Marqwon and his cousin, M.H. Griffin III, approaching Clampit's residence around the time of the incident. The footage captured a muzzle flash, followed by the two individuals fleeing the scene.
On July 12, 2024, the Wichita Falls Police Department SWAT team executed a search warrant at a residence in the 800 block of Gerald Street, detaining several individuals for questioning. The following day, both Marqwon and M.H. Griffin were arrested and charged with capital murder in connection to Clampit's death. According to affidavits, during the drug transaction, Marqwon allegedly drew a handgun, demanded Clampit surrender all his possessions, and then shot him when he claimed to have nothing more. Both suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
As of December 2024, both suspects remain in custody, each held on a $750,000 bond. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with both individuals awaiting trial for the charges against them. The tragic incident underscores the dangers associated with illicit drug transactions and has had a profound impact on the Wichita Falls community.
