On June 21, 2024, at approximately 3:50 p.m., Waco police officers responded to a shooting incident in the 2500 block of Summer Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 46-year-old Tony Alexander suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers administered immediate first aid before Alexander was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on June 23, 2024.
During the initial investigation, authorities identified 31-year-old Nathan Smith as a suspect in the shooting. Smith was arrested on June 21 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Following Alexander's death, the Waco Police Department indicated that additional charges were anticipated as the case transitioned into a homicide investigation. At the time of his arrest, Smith was held in the McLennan County Jail with a bond set at $350,000.
This incident marked Waco's ninth homicide investigation of 2024. The community expressed shock and grief over Alexander's death, with family and friends sharing condolences and memories on various memorial platforms. A celebration of life was held on July 7, 2024, at Reflections by Serenity in Waco, providing an opportunity for loved ones to honor Alexander's memory.
