Patrick James Dennehy, a 21-year-old American college basketball player for Baylor University, was born on January 28, 1982, in Santa Clara, California. He transferred to Baylor from the University of New Mexico after his sophomore season in 2001-2002. Dennehy was preparing to play for the Baylor Bears men's basketball team in the upcoming 2003-2004 season.
On June 12, 2003, Dennehy was shot by his teammate Carlton Dotson at a firing range in Waco, Texas.
Dennehy and Dotson had purchased guns and practiced firing them at a farm north of Waco in the summer of 2003. Dennehy's friend, Daniel Okopnyi, mentioned that Dennehy had expressed concerns about threats made to Dotson by two teammates. Dennehy was last seen on June 12, 2003, and his family reported him missing on June 19, 2003. His car was found abandoned in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on June 25, 2003, with its license plates removed.
Carlton Dotson, who was Dennehy's roommate and teammate, confessed to the murder after contacting the FBI from a hospital in Chestertown, Maryland. Dotson was arrested and charged with Dennehy's murder on July 21, 2003. Dennehy's body was later found in a field in Waco, and an autopsy confirmed that he had been shot twice in the head. The death was ruled a homicide.
