On June 30, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Port Arthur police responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Procter Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Troyne E’shon Mitchell, known as "T-ro," inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was immediately transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, where he was pronounced dead. Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr. ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Mitchell, a lifelong resident of Port Arthur, was a 2011 graduate of Memorial High School and was employed in construction by Zachary. He was known for his infectious smile, impeccable style, and deep love for his family, especially his young daughter, Kai’Cyn, whom he cherished dearly.
The circumstances surrounding Mitchell's death remain unclear, with conflicting accounts from witnesses. Some suggest the shooting was accidental, while others imply foul play. Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso has labeled the death as "suspicious" pending further investigation, including awaiting autopsy results and forensic analysis. Authorities have obtained some video footage from the night of the incident and are actively seeking additional footage and tips from the public to aid in their investigation.
While officers were on the scene of Mitchell's shooting, they heard gunfire from the nearby Opulence Lounge, located at 711 Procter Street. Upon investigation, they found two men with gunshot wounds to their legs. The victims declined to pursue legal action. However, police arrested 27-year-old Herbert Mouton at the scene for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. It remains uncertain how Mouton managed to enter the establishment with a weapon, given that the venue employed private security at the entrance.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Mitchell's death. The Port Arthur Police Department continues to investigate the incident and urges anyone with information or additional video footage to come forward.
