On July 15, 2024, 14-year-old Timothy Chavez was fatally shot outside his home on South Mittman Street in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m., when family members reported seeing Chavez walk outside to meet someone. Surveillance footage revealed a maroon sedan pulling up to the residence; shortly thereafter, multiple gunshots were heard, and the vehicle sped away. Chavez sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations uncovered that Chavez had arranged to sell an AR-15 style pistol to 17-year-old acquaintance, Gideon Segundo. The two had communicated via Instagram to set up the transaction. Instead of completing the purchase, Segundo allegedly arrived at Chavez's home in a maroon Mitsubishi Galant and fired 21 shots, killing Chavez before stealing the firearm. Police found 21 spent rifle casings at the scene.
Further evidence linked Segundo to the crime. Surveillance footage captured a maroon sedan near the crime scene, and a vehicle matching this description was found parked near Segundo's residence. Upon inspection, traces of human blood were discovered inside the car. Segundo initially claimed he had been forced to lend his car and phone to another person but ceased cooperation when inconsistencies in his story were questioned.
On September 3, 2024, San Antonio Police arrested Segundo, charging him with capital murder in connection with Chavez's death. His bond was set at $250,000. Chavez's mother, Samantha Servin, expressed her grief, noting that her son had trusted the individual responsible for his death. The tragic incident underscores the dangers associated with illegal firearm transactions and the devastating impact of gun violence on the community.
