Miguel Carvajal, a 20-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically shot to death on September 22, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a CVS drug store on Potranco Road. According to police reports, Carvajal was found in the driver's seat of his car, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The scene revealed multiple shell casings both inside and outside the vehicle.
A witness, who was with Carvajal at the time, informed the police that they were there for a drug deal. Two suspects entered the back seat of Carvajal's car, pulled out guns, and demanded all the drugs and other possessions. Carvajal attempted to reach for his own gun, managing to fire at least one shot, which struck one of the suspects. However, he was ultimately shot by one of the assailants. The suspects fled the scene in their own vehicle, and the wounded suspect was later dropped off at a nearby hospital.
The investigation led to the arrest of three teenagers in connection with the murder. Trevon Chaney, 18, was identified as one of the suspects and was charged with capital murder. Chaney was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the crime, which allowed the police to track his movements to both the crime scene and the hospital where the injured suspect was taken. The other two suspects were identified as Aviar Smith, 18, and Roger Koontz, 19. All three were charged with capital murder. The police were able to gather evidence from surveillance footage and witness statements, which confirmed the involvement of the suspects in the fatal shooting.
In court proceedings, Trevon Chaney was sentenced to 25 years on the lesser charge of aggravated robbery, while Roger Koontz had his capital murder charge dismissed due to insufficient evidence. The District Attorney's Office stated that Koontz drove his co-defendants to the scene of the murder but did not participate in the shooting. Aviar Smith, the third co-defendant, was given a 35-year plea deal on the lesser charge of murder. Both Smith and Chaney must serve half of their sentences before becoming eligible for parole.
