Born on August 30, 1971, in Minnesota, Joe was a dedicated employee at Applied Materials and a proud Marine Corps veteran. He was known for his passion for video games, sports—particularly Minnesota football and hockey—and his love for exploring history and new cuisines with his wife, Alicia. He is survived by his wife, children, parents, and other family members.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on East U.S. Highway 290 near County Line Road in Elgin. According to reports, a road rage altercation escalated between Joseph Stanczyk, driving a blue Chevrolet Malibu, and another motorist, Fabian Salas, operating a black GMC Sierra pickup. Witnesses observed both vehicles speeding and cutting each other off before coming to a stop at a traffic light. Stanczyk exited his vehicle and approached Salas's truck, leading to a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Salas allegedly drew a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and fatally shot Stanczyk in the head.
Fabian Salas, 34, remained at the scene following the shooting and was subsequently arrested by responding officers. He was charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Travis County Jail, with bond set at $1 million. Court documents indicate that Salas admitted to the shooting during his arrest. The investigation revealed that the two men did not know each other prior to the incident, and the confrontation appeared to stem solely from the road rage encounter.
