On July 16, 2024, at approximately 6:41 PM, deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of Raypine Drive in Spring, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old John Dennis Holmes III lying near a black 2017 Nissan Rogue, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Tragically, Holmes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations led to the arrest of 20-year-old Mark Anthony Crooms Jr., a friend of the victim.
Crooms was taken into custody on July 19, 2024, after authorities claimed to have found his fingerprints in Holmes' vehicle. However, Crooms maintained his innocence, providing surveillance footage from his home in Humble, Texas, which showed him there at the time of the murder. This alibi was corroborated by timestamps indicating his presence at home around 6:27 PM, just minutes before the shooting occurred approximately 17 miles away. Consequently, Crooms was released from custody, and charges against him were dropped.
Further investigation shifted focus to 18-year-old Isaiah Mayham. Detectives uncovered Instagram messages between Holmes and Mayham arranging a meeting at the location of the shooting, suggesting a planned firearm trade. Surveillance footage from a nearby apartment complex captured an individual matching Mayham's description fleeing the scene while holding two firearms, one notably equipped with a red magazine. Additionally, forensic analysis linked shell casings found at the crime scene to those recovered near Mayham's residence at the Rayford’s Edge apartment complex. Crucially, GPS data from Mayham's court-ordered ankle monitor placed him at the scene during the time of the shooting.
On August 14, 2024, based on this substantial evidence, authorities arrested Mayham, charging him with the murder of John Holmes III. It was revealed that at the time of the incident, Mayham was out on bond for a separate murder charge in Harris County from 2023. Sheriff Rand Henderson commended the investigative team's efforts, expressing hope that the arrest would provide some closure to Holmes' grieving family.
