The crime spree began around 7 p.m. on April 4, 2015, when Ferguson and Guzman robbed a healthcare worker in the parking lot of a nursing home in Spring.
They then stole a blue Mazda from another woman and threatened a third woman at a Target store, stealing her purse. About six hours later, they robbed a man at a McDonald's restaurant and, shortly after, shot Michael Aldana while robbing him in his car in a parking lot.
Before he died, Aldana provided a description of the gunmen to the police. A high-speed chase ensued when a Houston police officer spotted the stolen Mazda, but Ferguson and Guzman managed to escape, although they were later caught and arrested. The gun used in the shooting was recovered from the stolen vehicle, and ballistics tests confirmed it was the weapon that killed Aldana.
Jamal Ferguson was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Eric Guzman pleaded guilty to the murder and received a 40-year prison sentence. The case highlighted the severe impact of violent crime on communities and the importance of swift justice for victims and their families.
