Casey Caleb Senter-Talk, a 3-year-old boy from Spring, Texas, tragically died on July 5, 2015. The incident occurred at his grandparents' home in Spring, where Casey apparently shot himself with his grandfather's handgun. The gun had been stowed on or near a nightstand, according to officials with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Casey was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital via Life Flight helicopter but unfortunately died that night at the hospital.
The cause of his death has not been determined.
The incident remains under investigation, and a grand jury will review the case to decide whether the grandparents will face any charges. Under Texas law, the caregivers could be prosecuted for making a firearm accessible to a child, which is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman issued a news release after the incident, emphasizing the importance of keeping firearms out of the reach of children. Hickman's office also reminded individuals to take extra precautions when storing firearms in their homes, asking them to use gun locks in addition to keeping the weapon in a safe or vault.
