On April 14, 2023, 69-year-old Romero Sosa of La Porte, Texas, was fatally shot while riding his motorcycle on Interstate 45 near mile marker 114 in the Huntsville area. Sosa, along with Andrew Cole, 43, of Deer Park, and another 61-year-old man, were targeted in a shooting attack that afternoon. All three individuals were wearing clothing and insignia indicating their affiliation with an outlaw motorcycle gang. Sosa and Cole were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third rider was airlifted to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center for treatment.
Prior to this incident, the gunman had reportedly shot two other motorcyclists affiliated with the same outlaw motorcycle gang in Montgomery County. The first shooting occurred at approximately 11:08 a.m. on the feeder road in the 25000 block of I-45, where a 32-year-old man was shot and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Another motorcyclist was shot in Montgomery County but sustained non-life-threatening injuries and managed to flee the scene before seeking medical attention.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office indicated that these events were targeted attacks between rival outlaw motorcycle gangs and that the general public was not an intended target. Authorities, including local, state, and federal partners, have been collaborating to ensure public safety and investigate the incidents. As of the latest available information, the identity of the gunman has not been released, and no arrests have been reported in connection with the shootings.
