On September 9, 2023, 26-year-old Shantavia Briana "Bree" Reddick tragically lost her life in Spring, Texas. An esteemed third-grade teacher at Smith Elementary School in the Spring Independent School District, Reddick was recognized as the district's Rookie Teacher of the Year for the 2021-2022 school year. She held a bachelor's degree from Prairie View A&M University and had recently earned a master's degree from Texas Southern University.
The incident occurred when Reddick went to assist a friend involved in an ongoing domestic disturbance at the Belvedere at Springwoods Village apartment complex. Accompanied by her dog, she was attempting to help her friend leave an allegedly abusive relationship. Upon arrival, Reddick was confronted by her friend's boyfriend, 28-year-old Dimitri Humphrey, who fatally shot both her and her dog. Humphrey fled the scene in a white Jeep Wrangler.
Following the shooting, a manhunt ensued for Humphrey, who was also wanted on unrelated felony warrants. On September 20, 2023, law enforcement officers located him in Houston. When officers attempted to apprehend him, Humphrey opened fire, leading to a "moving gun battle." The confrontation ended with Humphrey being fatally shot by police. No officers were injured during the exchange.
Reddick's untimely death has deeply affected her students, colleagues, and the broader community. Spring ISD expressed profound sadness, noting that Reddick had been a beloved team member at Smith Elementary since 2020. Her commitment to education and her courageous act to protect a friend are remembered as testaments to her character and dedication.
