On July 20, 2024, 14-year-old Abraham Choukair was found fatally shot in the driver's seat of a parked vehicle at an apartment complex located at 8800 Hammerly Boulevard in Houston's Spring Branch area. Responding to reports of a shooting around 12:45 p.m., Houston Police Department officers discovered the unresponsive teenager, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics.

Witnesses reported that shortly before the shooting, Choukair was seen conversing with a Hispanic female dressed in a black hoodie. She was accompanied by a Hispanic male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with white designs, blue pants, black sandals, and carrying a black and white Nike backpack. Both individuals were observed fleeing into the apartment complex immediately after the incident.

In the ensuing investigation, Houston police released surveillance images of the male suspect and appealed to the public for assistance in identifying him. By September 5, 2024, the male suspect was identified as 17-year-old Joshua Garcia, who was subsequently charged with murder; however, he remained at large. On October 15, 2024, a 16-year-old female suspect was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Choukair's death. Due to her juvenile status, her identity has not been disclosed.

As of December 2024, Joshua Garcia remains a fugitive. Authorities continue to seek public assistance in locating him, urging anyone with information to contact the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division or Crime Stoppers.

Choukair's family has expressed profound grief and frustration over the loss of their youngest member. His brothers, one serving in the military and another as a paramedic, lamented the tragic irony of their professions exposing them to death, yet being unprepared for the loss of their 14-year-old sibling. They suspect that Abraham may have been associating with the wrong crowd, which could have led to his untimely death.

The community has been deeply affected by this tragedy, highlighting concerns over rising juvenile gun violence in Harris County. Data indicates a 76% increase in the county's juvenile homicide rate from 2021 to 2023, underscoring the urgent need for effective interventions to protect the youth.
