On August 26, 2024, 21-year-old nursing student Muna Pandey was found deceased in her southwest Houston apartment, located at 6363 West Airport Boulevard. Her body was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, including to her torso and the back of her head.
Pandey, originally from Nepal, had been residing in Houston since 2021 to pursue her nursing studies at Houston Community College.
She was also employed at a local phone store and had previously worked at a Nepalese restaurant in the area.
Concerns arose when Pandey failed to attend a planned birthday celebration on August 24 and ceased responding to messages from friends and her employer. An anonymous call to the apartment's leasing office reported a "dead body," prompting management to contact authorities. Upon entry, police found Pandey lying in her bed, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex revealed a man, later identified as 51-year-old Bobby Singh Shah, entering Pandey's apartment with her on August 24. The video showed Shah holding a firearm and instructing Pandey to open her apartment door. Approximately an hour later, Shah was seen leaving the apartment carrying Pandey's purse.
Investigators received tips from individuals who recognized Shah from the released surveillance images. One acquaintance identified him as a frequent customer at the restaurant where Pandey had previously worked. Another individual recognized Shah from a "sugar daddy" website.
On August 28, 2024, Houston police arrested Shah during a traffic stop in northwest Houston. He was charged with capital murder and is currently held without bond in the Harris County Jail. Court documents indicate that Shah is accused of killing Pandey during the course of a robbery.
The Nepalese community in Houston has been deeply affected by Pandey's tragic death. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist her mother, Anita Pandey, with travel expenses from Nepal to Houston and to cover funeral costs. Funeral services were scheduled for September 9, 2024.
As the investigation continues, authorities are examining the nature of the relationship between Pandey and Shah, as well as the events leading up to the fatal shooting. The community remains in mourning, seeking justice for the promising young student whose life was tragically cut short.
