On September 21, 2024, in Austin, Texas, 76-year-old Anthony Maxa and his wife, 74-year-old Shari Mallory-Maxa, were found deceased in their home on Brookhill Drive. Both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy revealed that Anthony was shot six times, with at least one shot fired from less than three feet away, while Shari was shot three times.
The couple's grandson, 21-year-old Chevy Kyler Monaghan, was arrested at the scene.
Family members had requested a welfare check after being unable to contact the Maxas and reported that Monaghan was refusing to let them see the couple. When officers arrived, they found Monaghan in the driveway, behaving nonchalantly—he reportedly sat down, lit a marijuana cigarette, and opened a soda can. He informed officers that his grandparents were inside and unharmed but did not disclose their deaths.
Upon entering the residence, officers discovered the bodies of Anthony and Shari in the hallway. The investigation indicated that Monaghan had shot and killed his grandparents. Evidence collected included ammunition in Monaghan's pockets, some of his grandmother's jewelry, and her prescription medications. The couple's bedroom appeared ransacked, with empty jewelry boxes and dresser drawers strewn about. Additional items, such as more jewelry and blank checks belonging to the victims, were found in a vehicle Monaghan was loading.
Monaghan was charged with capital murder and booked into the Travis County Jail. The deaths of Anthony and Shari Maxa were recorded as Austin's 44th and 45th homicides of 2024.
A vigil was held on September 28, 2024, at Garrison Park in Austin to honor the memory of Anthony and Shari. Their funeral services were scheduled for October 3, 2024.
