On the night of October 16, 2024, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Killeen Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim in the 800 block of West Avenue D. Upon arrival, they discovered 37-year-old Anthony Glenn Powell suffering from a gunshot wound. Powell was airlifted to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Larry Wilkey at 6:34 a.m.
on October 17, 2024. An autopsy was ordered to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
In the course of their investigation, detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the area and observed two individuals on bicycles near the scene around the time of the incident. One individual was riding an electric bicycle equipped with a headlight and taillight, while the other was on a pedal bicycle without lights. The Killeen Police Department has expressed interest in speaking with these individuals, considering them persons of interest who may have information pertinent to the case.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Powell's death. The Killeen Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Unit continues to actively investigate the case. Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community related to this incident.
