On the evening of May 1, 2023, 31-year-old Clayton Bryant Sills of Pittsburg, California, was fatally shot in Antioch. After attending his 9-year-old son's baseball game, Sills left to pick up a pizza for his family but did not return. Concerned after half an hour, his wife, Ariana, tracked his location to a 7-Eleven on Hillcrest Avenue. Upon arrival, she found the area cordoned off by police, with her husband's car present at the scene.
According to Antioch police, officers responded to reports of a solo vehicle collision in the 7-Eleven parking lot around 7:40 p.m. They discovered Sills in the driver's seat of his Toyota Avalon, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Evidence suggested the shooting occurred inside the vehicle, possibly near a nearby restaurant or gas station, before Sills drove across Hillcrest Avenue and crashed at the 7-Eleven. Witnesses reported seeing two men fleeing from his car on foot.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown. Antioch Police Chief Steven Ford stated that the investigation is ongoing, with detectives diligently working to identify any suspects or persons of interest. The incident marked the second homicide in Antioch for the year 2023.
