On the evening of June 6, 2023, 52-year-old Alfredo Salcedo Cuevas was fatally shot outside his home in Reedley, California. Cuevas, a dedicated father and hardworking cook holding two jobs in Fresno County, had just returned from work and was pulling into his driveway around 9:30 p.m. when an unknown assailant approached and shot him. Despite immediate medical attention, Cuevas succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The tragic incident was part of a violent spree that night, during which two other individuals—a 54-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man—were also shot and critically injured in separate locations within Reedley. Authorities believe these attacks were random, as the victims did not appear to have any connection to the shooter.
Law enforcement swiftly responded to the shootings. Reedley Police officers encountered a suspect matching witness descriptions near the Riverland Apartment Complex. Upon approach, the suspect fired at the officers, prompting three officers to return fire, fatally wounding him. The suspect was later identified as 20-year-old Moises Tellez, a Reedley resident with a significant criminal history. Notably, Tellez had been released from prison just one day prior to the shootings.
The community was left in shock by the seemingly senseless violence. Cuevas's family, mourning the loss of a beloved father, uncle, brother, and son, expressed their devastation. His niece, Gabriela, remembered him as a caring person who enjoyed spending his free time with family. Cuevas leaves behind three children, the youngest being 13 years old.
In the aftermath, the Reedley Police Department placed the involved officers on paid administrative leave, following standard protocol. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office took charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while Reedley Police continued to investigate the shootings of the three victims. Authorities urged anyone with information, photos, or videos related to the incidents to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
