On July 4, 2023, 19-year-old Mactavious Brasean Garren was fatally shot during a meeting arranged for an illegal gun sale in south Sacramento. The encounter, which took place around 12:30 p.m. on the 4100 block of 49th Avenue, turned violent when a 15-year-old suspect allegedly opened fire, resulting in Garren's death at the scene and injuries to his 18-year-old cousin, who survived.
In the days following the incident, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office arrested two teenage suspects. The 15-year-old alleged shooter was charged with murder, while a 17-year-old accomplice faced robbery charges. Both were booked into juvenile hall on July 9, 2023.
Garren, remembered by family and friends as a joyful and energetic individual, was known for his love of dancing and aspirations in music. His untimely death prompted vigils and calls from his family for justice and an end to youth gun violence in the community.
