On July 8, 2023, 34-year-old Natasha Irizarry of Ceres, California, was fatally shot outside her room at the Driftwood Inn on South Ninth Street in Modesto. Deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting and found Irizarry with multiple gunshot wounds; despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Irizarry was a hardworking single mother of three daughters, aged 13, 14, and 16, and served as a caregiver for her ailing mother and grandmother. She held multiple jobs, including working as a filler operator at SunOpta, where she was the first woman to hold that position, and as a driver for Uber. Her family and friends remember her as a dedicated mother who balanced her professional responsibilities with her family life, often attending her daughters' softball games and engaging in outdoor activities with them.
In the course of the investigation, authorities arrested 31-year-old Juan Carlos Martinez of Modesto on July 11, 2023. He was charged with homicide, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit a crime. These charges stemmed from both Irizarry's murder and a related robbery incident at the motel, where Martinez and an accomplice allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint, taking his cellphone.
The accomplice was identified as 36-year-old Luis Vega of Modesto. Initially, Vega evaded capture, leading authorities to consider him armed and dangerous. However, on July 25, 2023, Vega turned himself in at the Stanislaus County Jail after learning of the warrant for his arrest. Both Martinez and Vega faced charges of murder, robbery, and burglary, with additional enhancements related to the use of a firearm during the commission of these crimes.
The motive behind Irizarry's murder has not been publicly disclosed by law enforcement. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Juan Rodriguez or the Stanislaus County Area Crime Stoppers to assist in the ongoing investigation.
