On the evening of July 16, 2023, at approximately 10:44 p.m., 19-year-old Melanie Lizbeth Mancera and a 21-year-old female companion were standing outside near the intersection of South Gless and East First streets in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. They were approached by two male suspects who drew handguns and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
Tragically, Melanie was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Her companion sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a local hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) indicated that the shooting was believed to be gang-related, though it was not confirmed whether the victims had any gang affiliations.
