On the evening of July 21, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers from the Tracy Police Department responded to a report of a deceased individual at a residence in the 1700 block of Thicket Court in Tracy, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 65-year-old Carla Carroll, who was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified as the obvious victim of a homicide.
The investigation was promptly taken over by the General Investigations Unit (GIU) of the Tracy Police Department.
Through their investigative efforts, detectives identified the victim's son, 26-year-old Spencer Carroll, as the primary suspect in the homicide. He was arrested in the morning hours of July 22, 2023, and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on one count of homicide.
Reports indicate that Spencer Carroll was already in custody at the San Joaquin County Jail at the time he was named a suspect in his mother's death. He had been arrested in Stockton on the evening of July 21, 2023, in connection with an unrelated disturbance in a neighborhood. Following his identification as a suspect in his mother's homicide, he was re-arrested and formally charged with one count of homicide.
