Valeria Guadalupe García Cruz, a 20-year-old resident of Tracy, California, tragically lost her life on June 3, 2021, in a harrowing incident that also claimed the life of her brother, Jesus Garcia Cruz. The siblings were shot and killed outside their home in the early hours of the morning. The suspected gunman, Allenray Calamba, was identified as Valeria's ex-boyfriend. The incident occurred when Calamba ambushed Valeria as she returned home from work, armed with a semi-automatic pistol. Upon hearing the commotion, Valeria's brother and father rushed outside, only to be met with gunfire. Jesus was shot four times and succumbed to his injuries, while their father was wounded by a gunshot to the leg. Valeria was also shot four times and died at the scene. Calamba attempted to take his own life by shooting himself in the chest but survived and was taken into custody.

The case against Allenray Calamba progressed swiftly. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including multiple murders, lying in wait, and gun enhancements. Additionally, he faced one count of attempted, willful, deliberate, and premeditated murder for the attack on Valeria's father. The prosecution presented a compelling case, detailing how Calamba had lain in wait to ambush Valeria, driven by a motive rooted in their past relationship. The court proceedings revealed the premeditated nature of the crime, highlighting the calculated steps Calamba took to ensure he would encounter Valeria upon her return home.

In October 2023, Calamba was convicted on all charges. The court found him guilty of the murders of Valeria and Jesus Garcia Cruz, as well as the attempted murder of their father. The special circumstances attached to the charges, such as lying in wait and the use of a firearm, underscored the severity of the crime. The sentencing phase concluded in December 2023, with Calamba receiving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The judge emphasized the heinous nature of the crime and the profound impact it had on the victims' family and the community at large.

The tragic deaths of Valeria and Jesus Garcia Cruz left their family and the Tracy community in deep mourning. Valeria, remembered as a kind and loving young mother, left behind a young son. The family faced not only emotional devastation but also financial burdens, prompting them to seek community support through fundraising efforts. The case drew significant attention, highlighting issues of domestic violence and the devastating consequences it can have on families. The successful prosecution and sentencing of Allenray Calamba provided a measure of justice for the victims and their loved ones, though the loss they endured remains immeasurable.
