On July 29, 2023, at approximately 4:03 p.m., deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to reports of a gunshot victim in the 2000 block of Santa Fe Avenue in Compton, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 33-year-old Fidel Cortez with gunshot wounds to his upper body in a pallet yard located in a commercial-industrial area north of the Gardena (91) Freeway. Paramedics from the Compton Fire Department pronounced Cortez dead at the scene.
