Hakim Webster, a 36-year-old resident of Compton, California, was tragically shot and killed on January 25, 2019. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the New Holy Trinity Baptist Church, located at 1919 East Compton Boulevard. Webster was attending a funeral for his cousin, Jakiera Green, who had died in a hit-and-run accident in Louisiana earlier that month.
The church was filled to capacity with approximately 200 mourners, some of whom were standing outside due to the large turnout.
During the funeral service, a man stood up and began yelling something disrespectful, which led to a series of altercations both inside and outside the church. The situation escalated into physical fights among the attendees. Amidst the chaos, Webster was outside in the parking lot when the suspect approached and shot him, along with two other individuals. While the two other victims survived their injuries, Webster was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:08 p.m. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the neck.
The suspect in the shooting was described as a black adult male. Despite the presence of many witnesses, the investigation faced challenges, and authorities urged anyone with information to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau or Crime Stoppers to provide anonymous tips. The case remains under investigation, with law enforcement continuing to seek leads to identify and apprehend the perpetrator responsible for Webster's death.
