On August 17, 2023, at approximately 10:05 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers responded to a shooting in the 500 block of South Lorena Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 45-year-old Fermin Ruelas inside his residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention, Ruelas was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly identified 26-year-old Michael Monarrez as the primary suspect in Ruelas's homicide.
Monarrez was apprehended shortly after the incident. Further inquiries revealed that Monarrez, along with a 14-year-old accomplice, was also involved in the murder of 16-year-old Alfonso Ramos on August 12, 2023, at the Evergreen Park Recreation Center in Boyle Heights.
Authorities have indicated that these homicides may be linked to gang-related activities in the Hollenbeck Division. LAPD Chief Michel Moore noted that the suspects could be connected to up to six homicides in the area, though details of the additional cases have not been disclosed. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has charged Monarrez with two counts of murder, and a petition has been filed to charge the juvenile suspect with murder as well.
