On October 16, 2023, 42-year-old Stacie Lee Mendez was fatally shot in Sunnyvale, California. The incident occurred around 5:28 a.m. in the 1700 block of Karameos Drive, where officers discovered Mendez and another woman, both in their 40s, inside a vehicle. Mendez succumbed to her injuries, while the second woman sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The surviving victim provided information leading authorities to identify 68-year-old Sunnyvale resident, Marvin Churchill, as the suspect. A pursuit ensued, but Churchill evaded capture. Approximately an hour later, his vehicle was located in a wooded area near the 17000 block of Stevens Canyon Road in Cupertino, where he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators confirmed that Churchill and the victims were acquainted; however, the exact nature of their relationship and the motive behind the shooting remain unclear. Friends of Mendez, who gathered for a candlelight vigil at the Municipal Rose Garden in San Jose, described her as a compassionate individual who always prioritized others. They expressed bewilderment over the circumstances leading to her tragic death.
As of now, the investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident. No further arrests have been reported in connection with the case.
