On November 30, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of West Gage Avenue and Hoover Street in South Los Angeles. Upon arrival, they discovered 41-year-old Obet Garcia-Ortega, a Hispanic male, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Garcia-Ortega was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as a homicide resulting from the gunshot wound. Garcia-Ortega was identified as a homeless individual, and his death occurred in the Harvard Park neighborhood.
In the aftermath of the incident, the LAPD's South Bureau Homicide Division launched an investigation into Garcia-Ortega's death. As of December 1, 2023, detectives had not identified any suspects or motives related to the shooting.
