Eric L. Vaughn, a 28-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on January 31, 2025, in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago. Vaughn was standing on a sidewalk in the 8500 block of South Morgan Street when four individuals exited a vehicle and opened fire. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Vaughn lived in the same block where the shooting occurred. Authorities confirmed that no arrests had been made immediately following the incident, and Area 2 detectives launched an investigation into the case.

Further details emerged regarding the circumstances leading up to Vaughn’s murder. Federal officials revealed that Vaughn had attended a routine status hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse earlier that day. He was on electronic monitoring for a machine gun possession case. Unbeknownst to him, three gunmen, including Marquez “Smoke” Robinson, had been circling the courthouse in two vehicles, waiting for him to leave. As Vaughn arrived home, Robinson and two unidentified accomplices exited a silver Nissan Maxima and began shooting. A witness recorded part of the attack, capturing three armed men near Vaughn’s body. One of the assailants reportedly fired additional rounds at Vaughn even after he had collapsed.

Chicago police recovered 52 shell casings from the crime scene, and Vaughn’s neighbor later turned in another 18 casings found in nearby bushes. Approximately 30 minutes after the shooting, the suspects’ stolen Nissan Maxima was discovered burning in suburban Dixmoor. Authorities later arrested Robinson in connection with a separate burglary case and executed a search warrant at his residence. They found a gray hooded sweatsuit with black striping that matched the attire worn by one of the gunmen. While Robinson has not been formally charged with Vaughn’s murder, federal prosecutors have charged him with being a felon in possession of ammunition. Investigators continue to analyze video footage, phone location data, and license plate reader records to build their case.
