On January 6, 2024, 61-year-old Darrell Ray Bonds was found deceased at his residence in Reedley, California, alongside his father, 81-year-old Billy Bonds, and his sister-in-law, 44-year-old Guadalupe "Kiki" Chavez Bonds. The initial discovery occurred when Reedley police responded to a reported burglary at the Bonds' home on South Church Avenue. Officers found an empty, pried-open safe and subsequently located the bodies of Billy and Guadalupe in the backyard. Further investigation led to the discovery of Darrell's body buried in a shallow grave on the property.
A few days later, on January 9, 2024, authorities found the body of Darrell's son, 43-year-old Matthew Bonds, in a detached garage at a neighboring residence. The suspect in the murders is a 17-year-old male neighbor and friend of Matthew. The teenager was arrested and charged with four counts of homicide. His mother, 34-year-old Brynn Curtis, and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Rafael Gonzalez, were also arrested on charges of accessory after the fact; both have since been released on bail.
Autopsy reports confirmed that all four victims died from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the motive for the killings involved items stolen from the Bonds' safe, including weapons and currency. Some of Billy Bonds' belongings were reportedly found at the suspects' residence. Reedley Police Chief Joe Garza indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of additional suspects being involved.
The Reedley community has been deeply affected by the tragedy. A candlelight vigil was held on January 12, 2024, at the Bonds' family home, where over 100 residents gathered to honor the victims and support the grieving family. Local pastors, police department leaders, and family members spoke at the vigil, sharing memories and expressing their commitment to seeking justice for the deceased.
Darrell Bonds was remembered as a dedicated family man with a passion for mechanics, particularly classic cars. He was known for his infectious smile and willingness to help others in the community. In his youth, Darrell earned a black belt in judo and traveled to Japan for advanced competition. His sudden and violent death, along with those of his family members, has left a profound void in the Reedley community.
