On January 8, 2024, at approximately 7:10 p.m., 16-year-old Elmer Quintanilla and a 17-year-old friend were walking near the 13000 block of Carl Street in Pacoima, California, after playing basketball with younger children. A silver Dodge Charger approached them, and after a brief conversation, the front-seat passenger exited the vehicle and opened fire. As the teens attempted to flee, two additional suspects exited the vehicle and continued shooting. Quintanilla fell to the ground, where the initial shooter stood over him and fired multiple rounds, resulting in his death. His friend sustained a gunshot wound to the leg but managed to escape and was expected to recover.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an investigation, utilizing surveillance footage from the area to identify the suspects. Search warrants were executed at multiple residences, leading to the recovery of several firearms and pertinent evidence. By late January 2024, four individuals were arrested in connection with the shooting:
- **Giovanny Montesdeoca**, 21, was arrested on January 26 in Lancaster.
- **Jose Espinoza**, 18, was arrested on January 29 in Oxnard.
- Two juveniles, identified only by their last names, **Gomez** and **Lopez**, were arrested on January 26 in California City.
All suspects were booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and were held without bail. One of the juveniles was expected to be tried as an adult.
Family members described Quintanilla as a funny kid who loved sports and playing with his nieces and nephews. The community mourned his loss, setting up a memorial at the site of the shooting.
