On February 20, 2024, in Santa Clara, California, 3-year-old Ivan Martinez-Alvarado was tragically shot and killed while sleeping in his crib. The incident occurred in the early hours at the Riley Square Apartments, where Ivan lived with his mother and her boyfriend, 24-year-old Sergio Colin-Gomez.
According to reports, the events leading up to the shooting began when Colin-Gomez returned home around 10 p.m.

Colin-Gomez reportedly broke through the locked door, left briefly, and returned with a firearm. He was taken into custody and later charged with murder and assault upon a child under eight causing death. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating, "We are sickened and heartbroken at the senseless murder of Ivan."
