Night Watchman George Whybark, aged 55, tragically lost his life on March 14, 1910, in Santa Clara, California. He was shot and killed by a lone gunman while attempting to thwart a burglary at a jewelry store on Franklin Street. The assailant fled into the backyard of a nearby saloon upon seeing Whybark approach. As Whybark searched the area, the suspect emerged from the darkness and shot him four times.
