Jose Barroetabena Morejon, a 26-year-old Hispanic male from Crestview, Florida, tragically lost his life on May 21, 2021, in a shooting incident outside the Coyote Ugly nightclub in Destin, Florida. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. when deputies responded to reports of multiple shots fired in the parking lot of the nightclub. Upon arrival, they found Morejon and another victim with gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, Morejon succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the other victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The investigation revealed that a fight had broken out after the nightclub closed, during which Morejon reportedly fired a weapon recklessly in multiple directions. Witnesses stated that a 22-year-old man from Montgomery, Alabama, who was in the vicinity with his friends, returned fire, discharging six to seven shots in response to the perceived threat. This individual claimed he acted out of concern for his safety and the safety of his friends. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) corroborated these accounts with evidence collected from the scene and video footage captured by a bystander.

Following a thorough investigation, the OCSO, in conjunction with the State Attorney's Office, concluded that the shooting was a justifiable homicide. The decision to close the case was based on the findings that Morejon's actions had posed a significant threat, prompting the 22-year-old to act in self-defense. The investigation also involved identifying potential witnesses and suspects, including individuals seen leaving the scene in a white, newer model car, a convertible, and a large SUV. However, no arrests were made as the shooting was deemed justified.

The tragic death of Jose Morejon highlights the dangers of firearms and the potential for violence in situations involving alcohol and late-night altercations. The case underscores the importance of thorough investigations and the role of self-defense laws in determining the outcomes of such incidents. Despite the closure of the case, the impact of Morejon's death continues to be felt by his family and the community.
