On March 21, 2024, at approximately 4:20 a.m., 20-year-old Kendra Reana McIntyre was found with a gunshot wound near the intersection of 70th Street and Figueroa Street in South Los Angeles, an area known for sex work. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Kendra was the daughter of Debra Rush, a well-known advocate for human trafficking victims and founder of the Fresno-based nonprofit Breaking the Chains.
Debra Rush is herself a survivor of human trafficking and has dedicated her life to supporting others affected by the crime.
In the months following Kendra's death, the Los Angeles Police Department conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of a 14-year-old female suspect. On May 6, 2024, the juvenile was taken into custody without incident, and on May 7, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed a murder charge against her. Due to the suspect's age, her identity has not been publicly disclosed.
