On the evening of April 16, 2024, 74-year-old Loren Almando Ryan was fatally shot while playing dominoes with other elderly men in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The incident occurred around 10:25 p.m. at a makeshift game room near Denker and Manchester Avenues. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), an unidentified individual approached the area and opened fire, striking Ryan in the abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Community members expressed shock and sorrow over the loss. Warren Howell, a local business owner familiar with the gatherings, described Ryan as a quiet individual who enjoyed relaxing and socializing during the game nights held every Tuesday and Friday. The sudden act of violence has left residents concerned about safety in their neighborhood.
